about

Andy wrote this song a few years ago after moving back from Germany and learning the hard way that you can’t go home again. It’s about longing for the past, living in the present, and dreaming about the future. The basic tracks were recorded live in an old camper trailer (Thanks, Lisa Ring!) in Brandes’s backyard. We got our buddy Todd K. to play accordion to thicken up the swells and we thought it was a fine thing. Then Kim, who had graciously let us start practicing in her basement, sang on it and she took things to a whole new level.

lyrics

Tennessee
Won't you let me go
Been good to you so long
Now it's time you let me know
Is there something going on
Maybe a reason I could stay
Now she won't listen to me
Anyway

California
Where you been all my life
I been trying to work things out
For a long, long time
I can feel you in the air
I can hear you in a song
That record it's been skipping
Now way too long

So I can get in my car and I can drive
I can drive until that ocean meets the sky
That won't really change the way I feel
I gotta get behind you girl and not this wheel

Carolina
I see you in my dreams
But are tombstones in the ground
Really what a family means
There's nothing left to do
And nobody left to see
I guess it's best I stay
In Tennessee

So I can get in my car and I can drive
I can drive until that ocean meets the sky
That won't really change the way I feel
I gotta get behind you girl and not this wheel
I gotta get behind you girl
